Action Embroidery ABU Skill Badge Scuba Diver
The scuba diver ABU skill badge is a qualification badge of the uniformed services of the United States that is awarded to officers who are qualified divers. When the badge was first issued during World War II, it was worn on the uniform’s left sleeve while the rating insignia was worn on the right sleeve. It later became an insignia worn on the breast in the late 1960s. The United States Maritime Services, Army and Air Force all issue their own scuba diving insignia to represent the individual’s skill and proficiency in that endeavor.
The scuba diver ABU skill badge consists of a scuba diver’s hood with face mask, mouthpiece and breathing tubes. This is the distinctive equipment used by scuba divers, and it symbolizes the skills and abilities that are needed to qualify for basic diver rating. Certain military branches offer additional degrees of the Scuba Diver Badge. These other levels include Salvage, Second Class, First Class and Master. The requirements for each level are contained in AR 611-75.
